Cross country skiing in Lake Louise

Posted on February 3, 2020February 3, 2020 by Kelly Smith

One of the most popular activities in a Canadian Rockies wintertime is cross-country skiing. There are numerous trails in the Lake Louise area that are easily accessible and offer breathtaking views of mountain peaks. Many of the trails are track set for classic skiing and groomed for skate skiing. One of the most popular trails is Moraine Lake road near Lake Louise. This trail is double track set and groomed for skate skiing. It is approximately 15 km return and has an elevation gain of 250m. The view of the Ten Peaks at the end of the trail is spectacular and well worth the gentle climb. There are also a couple of trails connecting to Moraine lake road that may be of interest.

If you are looking for a longer ski near Lake Louise that is relatively easy, the Great Divide is 20km return and has an elevation loss of 60m. This trail goes to the “Great Divide” where the BC and Alberta border meet. It is double track set and groomed for skate skiing. If you don’t want to ski, but you are interested in a fun adventure while taking in beautiful views and wildlife sightings, you may even want to take a dog sled tour on the Great Divide trail. This is a great activity the whole family can enjoy.

Another favorite trail is the Lake Louise loop. This double track set loop is approximately 4 km and begins by skiing across frozen Lake Louise. Once you have crossed the Lake, the trail meanders through the woods on gentle rolling hills. There are numerous other trails around the area, including trails for snowshoeing. It is important to pay attention to avalanche zones and to be prepared with proper equipment if you go into the back country or off marked trails.
